What does it do?
LetMeType is a small application that helps you in your writing process by automatically suggesting words as you type. It runs in the background and analyses and stores all the words you enter - regardless of what program you are working in. When you start typing a word it recognizes, a list of the most probable words is displayed, and you can select the one you need or just continue typing.
How does it work?
You let the program run in the background and it monitors and registers the words you are typing. When you type the first few letters of a word LetMeType knows, the suggestion window appear.
The suggestion window is a small window only displaying the suggestions - if you don't react on it and keep typing it disappears just as quickly as it appeared. If you want to choose one of the words displayed you can either click on it or type the number in front of it (all suggestions are numbered).
In the settings you can customize the program to a certain extent. You can for instance decide how many words shall be displayed in the suggestion window, as well as how many characters of a word you want to type before the suggestions appear. And you can decide how long an unused word shall remain in the vocabulary before it is deleted. Or you can have the program only make suggestions when your typing speed goes down - meaning you are stuck!
Furthermore you can tell the program not to store and save your passwords. And you can also tell the program which characters to recognize as being part of a word. You can use one vocabulary or you can create several vocabularies. Having several comes in handy when working on repeated translations with specific terminology.
What it isn't!
This is not a translation tool - it does not do any translating for you. I find it most useful to aid me in keeping my translation terminology consistent. And it saves me time typing out those long words that I already know how to translate.
One of the biggest limitations of the program is that it cannot read from the screen - it recognizes the words by collecting your keystrokes. This means; when you are editing a text, just changing one letter or making minor changes, the program cant recognize the word you are typing, as it doesn't receive the whole text string. In these cases you will not get any suggestions.
Is it easy to use?
The program is very easy to use. Just install it, take a few minutes to adjust the settings to best suite your needs, and you are ready to go!
